Fourth Annual Acoustic Coffee House is a Success!
On March 1st, 2012 in Covel Grand Horizon, Pi Kappa Phi held its philanthropy concert, Acoustic Coffee House, for the fourth consecutive year. Acoustic Coffee House is both a benefit concert and a competition, featuring many talented UCLA musicians. The event raises money for Push America, Pi Kappa Phi's national philanthropy, which bring awareness to and raises money for people with disabilities. Free coffee, tea and cookies are served to complete the concert-going experience. To top it all off, the event boasts a turnout of more than 400 audience members. With its acclaim on campus and its growing fan base, Acoustic Coffee House has quickly become a UCLA Pi Kappa Phi tradition.
In order to perform, musicians were required to participate in one of the two volunteer events Pi Kappa Phi coordinated locally. The first option was meeting with UCLA Special Olympics and playing sports with people with mental and physical disabilities in order to help them develop socially and physically. The second option was performing for the patients at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica. The musicians were received warmly at both events, and many of the hospital patients and staff were so moved by the performances that they had tears in their eyes. Keeping with the spirit of raising disability awareness, Pi Kappa Phi invited four on-campus student groups, Best Buddies, Special Olympics, Adaptive Recreation and the Disabilities Minor to speak on behalf of their organizations and help increase involvement on the local level.
For the event, Pi Kappa Phi paired up with 4th Street Recording, a famous recording studio right next to Santa Monica beach. They are known for recording several platinum and gold albums by artists such as The Beach Boys, No Doubt, George Clinton, Fiona Apple and Rodrigo y Gabriela. The judges included former Pi Kappa Phi members as well as representatives from 4th Street Recording. The performer/group with the most judge votes was given a full recording session at 4th Street Recording. Acoustic Coffee House raised money for Push America through audience donations, and allowed people to exchange donations for votes. The performer/group with the most audience votes was awarded a cash prize of 250 dollars.
Acoustic Coffee House is the largest philanthropy event held by any fraternity at UCLA. Promoting the ideas of awareness and charity, Acoustic Coffee House plans on coming back year after year.

Brother Ralph Guerrero Needs Your Help Fundraising for Journey of Hope
Hello friends and family!
Or maybe you are a friend of a friend or a family member of mine. But in all cases, I would like to thank you for taking time from your busy schedules to visit my page!
As you may know, I will be cycling from San Francisco to Washington, DC on the Journey of Hope this summer, where we will be reaching out to thousands of people with disabilities, and spreading messages of acceptance and understanding to Americans along the way. One of the most tragic barriers is a lack of understanding by our society. A simple message of empathy and acceptance is all it takes to break down this barrier.
You may know someone with a disability, and understand the adversities they face everyday. Sometimes it is difficult trying to put yourself in their shoes in understanding how it is like living with a disability. I have a younger cousin with a disability and I know he faces many different challenges everyday. In a way, I would like this bike ride to be a metaphor in showing him that some things that seem physically impossible can be possible.
But to make this bike ride possible, we need your help! In efforts to reach my team's goal of over $500,000, my individual goal is to raise $5,500. I know we are in a very tough time in our economy right now, especially here in California. But if you cannot make a donation today, please help support by spreading this word of awareness. Because ultimately, our goal here is to have our society understand and accept those with disibilities.
Thank you very much for your support. Together we can make a difference!
Sincerely,
Ralph Guerrero

Brother Mike Borger Needs Your Help Fundraising for Journey of Hope
"There are over 54 million Americans living with disabilities today. People with disabilities face unimaginable challenges and difficulties. But one of the most tragic barriers is a lack of understanding by our society. A simple message of empathy and acceptance is all it takes to break down this barrier, and I have commited myself to spreading this message this summer.
I will be raising awareness on behalf of people with disabilities by cycling from San Francisco, CA all the way to Washington, DC on the Journey of Hope. My individual goal is to raise $7,000 as part of my team's goal of raising over $500,000. Along the journey, we will be reaching out to thousands of people with disabilities as well.
Please take the time to support Americans with disabilities and make a tax deductible donation to PUSH America. Every donation, no matter what size, helps me inch closer to my fundraising goal.
I have always wanted to ride in the Journey of Hope. Thank you for helping this dream become a reality!"
